High school basketball: West Linn shocks No. 1 Duncanville 62-50 to win Les Schwab Invitational title

The second to last night of 2022 provided the biggest upset of the year — and perhaps decade — in high school basketball as West Linn (Ore.) shocked No. 1 Duncanville (Texas) on Friday 62-50 to win the Les Schwab Invitational in Hillsboro, Ore.

West Linn was led by Oregon signee Jackson Shelstad, who scored a game-high 34 points on 8 of 24 shooting from the field and 12 of 13 from the free throw line. Adrian Mosley chipped in 14 for the Lions.

Ronald Holland led Duncanville with 24 points on 10 of 14 shooting with 12 rebounds. He was the only Panther in double figures.

West Linn (10-0) took down the top team in the MaxPreps Top 25 one night after handing a Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) team filled with sons of NBA players, including Bronny James, Ashton Hardaway and Justin Pippen, an 86-69 loss.

"Easily the biggest shocker in my 10 years of covering high school basketball," MaxPreps National Basketball Editor Jordan Divens said Friday night of the Portland-area school's stunner.

Duncanville (15-1) entered with wins over No. 3 Columbus (Miami, Fla.), No. 8 Centennial (Corona, Calif.) and No. 15 Roselle Catholic (Roselle, N.J.), but fell behind West Linn early and was never able to chip into the lead.

West Linn led 15-12 after the first period and took a 29-25 lead into halftime. Duncanville hacked into the deficit, trailing 36-33 a little more than halfway through the third period. But the Lions ramped up their defensive intensity and extended the lead to 13 points — 50-37 — after three quarters.

With a partisan crowd rooting on the local school, Duncanville wasn't able to get it back to single digits until the final minute of the contest.

Shelstad, who came into the tournament's championship game averaging 34.0 points per game, matched that average with eight boards in the 12-point win over the Panthers. The reigning MaxPreps Oregon Player of the Year produced 27.0 points, 5.5 assists, 5.2 rebounds and 3.2 steals per game as a junior, leading West Linn to the Class 6A semifinals.

West Linn was also the high school home of Boston Celtics point guard Payton Pritchard, who led the program to four consecutive state titles from 2013-16.
